I just burned a bag of microwave popcorn here in the office. As I type this, the smell is wafting over cube-ville, and everyone is asking themselves “who the hell did THAT?!”. I’m hiding, hoping the smell goes away. If they pin it on me, I’m dead. Dammit, I’m usually much more careful. Not to mention the fact that I’m hungry. Argh.
I’ve come to the realization that I’ve been sick for almost two months, off and on…. and that it’s been ever since I started my new job. It keeps mutating, adapting… just when I think I’m healthy, it’s back. Head cold, chest cold, sinuses, stomach… but always energy-sucking, sleep-interrupting, brain-dampening. What the hell is going on? The past few days have been particularly harsh. Bad flu symptoms, weakness, occasional nausea… I can’t motivate, but at the same time I’m doing too much, trying to pretend I’m not sick. And that’s making it worse.
So I’ve decided to fight it. Back to the doctor to demand some drugs. I’ve had it. I can only think it’s something about the work environment here… lots of bugs floating around that I’m not used to… the open-air cube environment that I’ve never had to work in? I don’t know… but the timing is suspicious.
In other news: I shaved off my beard. And I miss it already. It was an accident… totally unplanned. The plastic part of my beard clipper fell off… the one that keeps you from shaving down to the skin. It popped right off as I was going in, and I ended up with a big skin-stripe down the side of my face. There was no salvaging it. And I couldn’t bear to do a mustache, even as a joke. So here I am, back to the old me. Everyone here at work keeps giving me the funniest looks… a couple had no idea who I was… they haven’t seen me without the beard. And hopefully, they won’t see me like this for long. Come back, Beard! I think I’ll sit here and focus and make it grow back faster.
Everyone got a long weekend but me and my co-workers, it seems. But it was nice driving in this morning… Ghost Town. No traffic, easy parking, no waiting in line for my Dunkies Coffee. If only it was like that every day. Dream on, commuter-boy, dream on.
