Mp3s: Michael Penn at the Pru

So here’s a few songs from yesterday afternoon’s free performance by Michael Penn in the South Garden of the Prudential Mall here in Boston. While I must admit that I don’t know a lot about him beyond the 1989 single ‘No Myth‘ (and the fact that he happens to be Sean & Chris Penn’s brother, oh, and that he’s Mr. Aimee Mann), he’s been making records ever since, and his latest, Mr. Hollywood Jr. 1947, is out on the most-excellent SpinART label (whom I’ll be forever indebted to for putting together the greatest cd compilation of all time, and releasing a ton of other great records since). Michael’s mellow set really hit the spot, a pretty nice way to spend the lunch break of a stressful workday…

2. A Bad Sign
3. High Time
4. Don’t Let Me Go
5. On Automatic
7. Denton Road
I’d have offered up the other few songs from the set, but the wind was whipping around between the buildings, and overwhelmed my mic on those. Definitely not something I’m accustomed to when recording late night rock club shows.
Michael was joined by Buddy Judge (guitar, backup vocals, & shaking things) and Peter Adams (keyboard), and while three of the songs can be found on the new record, the other two appear on 2000’s MP4 (Days Since a Lost Time Accident). Mr. Penn returns to the area for a proper (i.e. not free) couple of shows in early October, when he’ll play Club Passim in Cambridge.
Again, if the performers or label crew have an issue with these songs being shared, just say the word.
update aug. 27th: As requested in the comments, here’s the remaining four tracks, shared despite the wind-damage…
1. Me Around
6. I Can Tell
8. Out Of My Hands
9. Walter Reed
