My still-ongoing project to encode and share the entirety of the 1992 Sub Pop Vermonstress Festival in Burlington, Vermont continues with a set from Mr. Chris Harford and his band at the time, the First Rays of the New Rising Sun.
If you’re not familiar with Mr. Harford, you’ve got a whole lot of catching up to do. Start here. He was a staple of the Boston music scene for awhile when he attended MassArt in the early 1980s, playing in the band Three Colors (which also featured Dana Colley of Morphine, Hub & Max Moore, and Barry Stringfellow). In Chris’ own words: “…eventually we became quite well-known in Boston. We then moved to London in 1986. Then back to New Jersey where we imploded like the drummer in Spinal Tap.”
In ’92 he released his first solo record, “Be Headed“, which is where most of the songs from this live set come from.
Since that first release on Elektra, he “…vanished into the system like the black hole of the industry will do to so many a band”, but he’s been plugging away ever since, putting out albums on his own Soul Selects Records imprint. Throughout his long career he’s collaborated with everyone from the Matt Sweeney, Ween, & Richard Thompson to Loudon Wainwright III, Andrew Weiss, & Kevin Salem.
Once you’re done downloading the live tracks, head over to his website for a whole bunch more mp3s, and buy some stuff from Chris if anything grabs ya.
Just a couple more Vermontress performances left to go. Joining Codeine, Come, Drop Nineteens, Velocity Girl, Crow, Pond, Six Finger Satellite, Green Magnet School, Sloan, Giant Sand, Barbara Manning, Eric’s Trip, & now Chris Harford will be sets from Gravel and H.P. Zinker.
