The Morning After

Posted on October 21, 2004 at 10:06 am | No Comments

Downtown Boston is naturally abuzz this morning, so many Red Sox caps above so many smiling faces. Office commuters resisting the urge to high-five every stranger they pass after last night’s still-totally-surreal win. It’s Paradise Theater, Song Number Five. I’ve got a happiness hangover.

The Sounds of a Celebration: I recorded some ambient celebratory crowd noise last night during our walk through Allston, at the corner of Harvard Ave. and Brighton Ave. That’s seven games of tension pouring out, with the help of a lotta beer.

In response to a reporter asking “How do you think Johnny Damon came alive during tonight’s game?”, David Ortiz responded early this morning with: “We kept him away from his girlfriend for the past two days. We told her she had to go sleep somewhere else.” Ah, the pure power of forced abstinence. Hilarious.

This was pointed out on a forum I frequent:

It’s been 86 years since 1918, the last Red Sox championship.

It’s been 18 years since 1986, their last World Series appearance.

My boss, an atypically classy Yankees fan, just told me that he’s going to honor a wager he tried to make with me last week, even though I refused to take him up on it. ‘Cuz if I did, we’d have lost. Thanks, Tim. Promise I won’t order the most expensive thing on the menu.

Another Yanks fan, Rob, says in the comments down below… “If the game was tighter it would have been tougher, but the lopsidedness of it made it easier to deal with.” This confirms that the world has indeed turned upside down… that sounds exactly like something a Sox fan would normally be saying! Freaky.

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t ridicule my virtual pal Neil down in NYC, yet another Yanks booster who offered up these recent quotes on his blog

October 7th: “Roll on Yanks… onto take the world series again. October is truly your month…

October 9th: “The scene is set for another historic series against those perennial losers and the Babe curse.”

October 17th: “Sweep…Cardinals here we come!!!!

Hey Neil, would you like me to send you a six pack of Sam Adams? I hear it goes down pretty smooth with a nice plate of crow. 😉

In honor of the victory, Comicopia (the best damn comic shop in Boston, and just a stone’s throw from Fenway Park) is marking everything in their store down 10% until the last game of the World Series. No matter how this thing plays out, if Kenmore Square starts burning, I’ll be down at Comicopia with Matt, keeping the flames away.

Let’s Just Do It: Check out the excellent new Sox-inspired Nike ad, which uses the Green Monster as a backdrop. You can stream it, download it, or grab some desktop wallpaper.

Oh. My. Check out this old video clip as Wakefield pitches in a game against Texas. Pay very close attention to the woman behind the plate, in the white shirt, just over Doug Mirabelli’s shoulder.

Surprised some over enthusiastic Yankees fan didn’t try this during Game Five. Would have explained the passed balls, that’s for sure.
